Segway Scooters Recalled

Nearly 24,000 Segway scooters were recalled yesterday, after the company discovered a software glitch that can make the scooter's wheels unexpectedly reverse direction. There have been reports of riders falling off the scooters and at least one instance where a rider suffered broken teeth. The glitch can be fixed by a free software upgrade available at Segway dealers.

Segway has received six reports of the problem with its Personal Transporter, but the company would not comment on whether these have sparked any lawsuits, and would not give details about the severity of the injuries sustained.

CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson told the Associated Press the injuries included broken teeth, a broken wrist and facial injuries, including one that needed surgical repair.
